Laurie Spagnolia, a decorative artist and entrepreneur, originally started her career as a sign painter, receiving her training at the Bloomfield School of Signcraft. Shortly thereafter, Laurie branched out and started stenciling as well as rendering a variation of decorative finishes.
In 1992, Laurie became a Certified Stenciler and Certified Stenciling Teacher, one of only 29 in the entire country, through Stenciling Artisan League, Inc. (SALI), which is now known as International Decorative Artisans League (IDAL). Laurie also served as the Vice-President of a local IDAL chapter for two years.
Laurie soon found her passion in teaching and over the years she has taught classes at Isabel O'Neil Studio in New York City and is currently a core instructor at Dundean Studios in Chatham, New Jersey. Laurie also taught a very popular Damask Stenciling class at the IDAL Convention in Memphis, TN. The classes she teaches include professional, advanced, and dimensional stenciling, as well as, strokework, freehand embellishment, wall quotes, and floor cloths. Laurie also assists Dean Sickler of Dundean Studios in classes specializing in Venetian plaster, painted furniture, and metallics.
In addition to teaching and designing stencils, Laurie performs every aspect of decorative finishing, including faux finishes, venetian plaster, wood graining, antiquing, and stenciling. Continued education enables her to render anything a client might need and she has brought her unique vision and innovative style to both commercial and residential projects from coast to coast.
Not only does Laurie run her own decorative painting company, Painting a Dream™, but she also enjoys working on larger projects with other decorative painters in the field. She was instrumental in working with Lucretia Moroni of Fatto A Mano on a large floor project for Bulgari penthouse in New York City in 1998. While she is always keeping busy, Laurie is particularly proud of the restoration project she partnered with Joanne Lynch of Sagebrush Designs to complete at the Masonic Temple in Trenton, NJ. Through the years, Laurie has had the pleasure of working with many distinguished fellow artisans throughout the US and Europe.
In addition to IDAL convention seminars, Laurie has also taken intensive training offered by master craftsmen from around the world. She has studied under Patrick LeHayne, Belgium; Lucretia Moroni, Italy; Pierre Finkelstein, New York; Shawn Crosby, Long Island; Carolina d'Ayala Valva, Italy; and Patrick Kirwin, Virginia.
Having an intuitive eye for color and design, Laurie is not only a well-known designer and instructor, but she has also become a respected consultant in the field. Her advice has been sought after by top companies in the industry such as Benjamin Moore, and her work as been featured in numerous catalogs, books, and media publications.
